Game Cocktails: Lemnos Sour

PIKUBYTES // Video Game Cocktails God of War Lemnos Sour

Focus, boy. These runic inscriptions guard a recipe desired by every soul from Midgard to Helheim, dead or alive. They speak of an unearthly beverage that ignites courage, charisma and an occasional dad joke. Many have fallen in pursuit of the Lemnos Sour, pecked to death by Odin’s ravens for seeking its taste after 8 p.m. But here, it’s a sanctuary. A safe place to learn how to mix my God of War tribute cocktail.

Personally, God of War (2018) was pure perfection. From brave boy to brat boy to balanced boy, Atreus’ journey to maturity was just as memorable as his father’s. The godly duo shared quite a few human moments, which hit home for many gamer parents across the globe. I mean, freeing dragons and hopping realms is an ordinary middle-class weekend, right? I wish… But today we’re here for the booze! So cue the elevator up from Tyr’s Temple. While stretching our wrists after another boss fight, we got to witness a chuckle-worthy moment. Check out this endearing cutscene, as Kratos bonds with his son over wine.

D’aaaww, right? These quotes have paved the way for my cocktail:

Kratos: “Lemnian wine. From the island of Lemnos, near the place of my birth.”
Wine! Just pour some wine into a jug and off you chug? No, boy! We’ll get classy with a float of red wine instead. Getting my hands on an actual wine from Lemnos was tricky (they exist, though!), so I simply chose a bottle with a bearded man. That’s right, sold on the label alone.

Atreus: “Smells like rotten eggs. Is it still good?”
Egg! Oh, Atreus. You sweet summer child. Or is he actually good at spotting sour wine? I followed his hypothesis anyway to create an egg white foam for the cocktail. It’s not exactly (or at all) rotten, but it’s pretty essential to layer the wine.

These notes and a New York Sour cocktail seemed like a match made in heaven. But I wanted to mimic the blue waters of the north, so bourbon was swapped for gin and blue curaçao instead.

So how exactly do we make a Lemnos Sour, boy?

Cocktail Ingredients:

60 ml (2 oz) London Dry Gin
30 ml (1 oz) Lemon Juice
15 ml (0.5 oz) Simple Syrup 1:1
8 ml (0.3 oz) Blue Curaçao
15 ml (0.5 oz) Egg White *
Float: 15 ml (0.5) Red Wine

* You can also substitute the egg white with aquafaba (the liquid from canned chickpeas), though it doesn’t foam as much.

Instructions:

  1. Pre-chill a rocks glass in the freezer. Keep it cool like Kratos’ demeanour.
  2. Pour the cocktail ingredients (not the wine!) into a Boston shaker. The Old Gods of Mixology say: Don’t separate the egg white over your cocktail, as you risk dropping the yolk in. Do it in a different glass.
  3. Seal and shake for a few seconds to emulsify the egg. This so-called “dry shake” creates that foamy top we’re going for. Note that the seal isn’t as tight at room temperature, so shake carefully.
  4. Add a few chunks of ice into the shaker, seal and shake again until cold. For a true Norse potion, use the remains of a defeated Ice Ancient.
  5. Strain the cocktail into the rocks glass, using a Hawthorne strainer.
  6. To float (layer) the wine, slowly pour it over the back of a bar spoon. Hold it at the glass’ edge to avoid colouring the foam. The cocktail’s thicker texture will keep the blood… err, wine afloat!
  7. Share the drink with Atreus or don’t. The parenting’s up to you.
  8. Say “Aaaah…” to appreciate the taste.
